EV installers in Abuja wiring an EV charge point during installation

What Determines the Cost of EV Charger Installation in Abuja

If you have just bought an electric vehicle in Abuja, the first quote you get for an EV charger installation can be confusing. Two homes on the same street can be quoted very differently, and neither installer is necessarily wrong. The price is driven almost entirely by what sits between your distribution board and the spot where you park.

Here is what actually moves the number, so you can read a quote properly and compare like for like.

1. The charger itself

A basic single-phase 7.4kW Type 2 wallbox and a three-phase 22kW unit are different pieces of hardware at different prices, and a DC fast charger is in another bracket entirely. Smart chargers that meter, schedule and report usage cost more than a simple on-off unit, but they pay for themselves quickly on a shared or commercial site. If you have been comparing a Level 2 charger installation cost quoted elsewhere, that is the same class of unit as a Type 2 AC wallbox here.

2. The distance from your board to your parking spot

This is usually the single biggest variable. A charger mounted on a wall three metres from the distribution board is a short cable run. A charger at the end of a compound, across a driveway, or on the other side of the building needs armoured cable, trunking or ducting, and sometimes trenching. Cable is priced by the metre and the labour scales with it.

3. What your existing supply can carry

An EV charger is one of the heaviest continuous loads a home will ever run. Before quoting, a competent installer checks the incoming supply, the size of the main breaker, the state of the consumer unit and what else runs at the same time. If the board is full, if the main cable is undersized, or if there is no spare way, the upgrade is part of the job and part of the price. Skipping this check is how chargers end up tripping every evening.

4. Protection and earthing

A charge point needs its own circuit with correctly rated protection, and proper earthing arrangements. These parts are not expensive relative to the whole job, but they are not optional, and a quote that leaves them out is not cheaper. It is incomplete.

5. Mounting and finish

Wall-mounting onto blockwork is straightforward. A pedestal or bollard mount in an open carport, a weatherproof enclosure, or a unit that has to be positioned to serve two bays all add materials and time.

6. Solar, inverter and backup integration

Many Abuja homes already run solar and battery storage. Tying the charger into that system so it charges from surplus solar, or so it does not drain the batteries during an outage, is extra design work. It is also where most of the long-term savings are, so it is usually worth it. Our guide to charging an EV on solar, inverter or grid power explains the trade-offs, and Abuja Solar & Energy Company covers solar-integrated EV charging installation in more depth.

What a good quote looks like

  • It comes after a site visit, not over the phone from a photo.
  • It names the charger model, its rating and its connector type.
  • It states the cable size and the approximate run length.
  • It lists the protective device and any board work separately.
  • It is fixed, so surprises on the day are the installer’s problem, not yours.

If a quote does not include those five things, ask for them before you compare it with anything else. You can see the kinds of jobs these numbers cover on our installations page, and the full range of work on our EV charging services page.

Why we survey before we quote

We assess the supply first because it decides everything else. It takes under an hour, it costs you nothing, and it means the price we give you is the price you pay. It also occasionally saves a client money, because not every home needs the biggest charger on the market, and there is no sense paying for capacity your supply cannot deliver.
